Hermanus hiking and walking adventures
can be enjoyed at the picturesque Fernkloof Nature
Reserve. Nestled in the mountains above Hermanus
and comprising of over 1 800 hectares of mountain
and fynbos, the Fernkloof Nature Reserve is a popular
destination amongst both nature fundis as well as
explorers.
The reserve hosts some of the largest carnivorous
plants in the world and many tourists travel from
afar to view these fascinatings giants of the floral
kingdom. The Roridula can grow up to two
metres tall (the size of a tall man)and its leaves
are a mass of hairs coated in sticky droplets, which
it uses to ensnare it's prey. Some specie of Roridula
have even been known to capture small birds, which
makes it a unique and rather dangerous member of
the floral kingdom. These plants are indigenous
to the Western Cape and are a major attraction for
both botanists and plant lovers.
Besides the abundance of flora - the Fernkloof Nature
Reserve is home to a recorded 92 species of bird,
including the Rock Thrush, Cape Sugar Bird, Sunbirds,
and Rock Jumper amongst numerous others. Several
species of insect and seed eating birds can also
be found here including t Canaries, Flycatchers
and White-eyes whilst the summer season marks the
annual return to the reserve of the migratory Swallow.
Animals can also be found at the reserve, including
the ever-enquisitive Baboon, Klipspringer, Mongoose
and the Dassies. Several rodents have also been
spotted scurrying around the reserve, most notable
of which is the Cape Spiny Mouse, a rather rare
species and thus a most welcome guest.
